Apple Intelligence (https://lnkd.in/gc6vatgk) was announced a few days ago, marking the introduction of Apple's own bet on AI / GEN AI platforms on iOS. Having a smaller proprietary LLM model in your phone (albeit, only for the most powerful phones out there, which I read is about 7% of the market in the US) it's a pretty big leap. LLMs on the cloud are not new, but to have a local, self-contained, fully trained LLM model on your phone that can keep the information that it uses private and confidential (at least in theory, as I'm no expert to assess that claim depth) represents the start of a new wave of device-stored AI assistants.I've always imagined a future where you will have your own, self-enclosed, personally-trained AI assistants dealing with all the inconvenient tasks of our digital life for us. However, the typical move of releasing these new AI-powered features on just the latest models, representing such a small part of the population, enticing people to buy a more expensive device for no real reason comes across — yet again — as questionable, to say the least. Must also say that seeing so much focus on emojis, avatars and somewhat tiny messaging interaction features continues to feel like a uninspiring use of such powerful technology (don't get me wrong, I use emojis all the time, who doesn't love a good emoji, right?). But I wish companies where really pushing the boundaries to create AI assistants, and device features that could enable us to spend less time on our devices, not more (I know, the screen-first economy is all about keeping people glued to the screens), but at this point I would hope AI, LLMs, speach recognition and smart assistants would start pushing the opposite way.A bit of a rambling, and obviously there are quite a few players on this race, but wanted to share some thoughts and hear what you think! #ai #genai #appleintelligence #smartassistants #deviceai #llm
