How many BTUs do I need for a 10000 gallon pool? ›

20,000 gallons x 8.3 lbs / gallon = 166,000 lbs of water that needs to be heated. Since it takes one Btu to heat one pound of water by a single degree, we now know that raising this entire 20,000-gallon pool by one degree will require 166,000 Btu of heat energy.

First, test your pool water chemistry: Chemical imbalance is one of the main causes of equipment failure, particularly of pool heaters. A dirty filter can also cause heater failure, preventing the heater from firing and/or causing it to shut off too soon.
