Topamac 25mg Tablet is a medicine used to treat epilepsy (seizures) and to prevent migraines. It is also used in the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a rare, but severe form of epilepsy that starts in early childhood).
Topamac 25mg Tablet may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time, each day. If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember it and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor may cause an increased frequency of seizures. Your doctor may advise regular monitoring of serum bicarbonate levels while you are taking this medicine.
Some of the common side effects of this medicine include nausea, taste change, fatigue, diarrhea, weight loss, loss of appetite, and memory impairment. It may also cause vision problems like myopia or glaucoma, so it is important to get your eyesight checked before you start the treatment and regularly thereafter. You may experience dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Please consult your doctor if these side effects bother you or do not go away.

It is not fully established how Topamac 25mg Tablet helps prevent migraines. In Epilepsy/Seizures
Topamac 25mg Tablet is an anticonvulsant (or anti-epileptic) medicine that works by decreasing the nerve impulses which cause the seizures. By controlling the frequency of seizures, it will help you go about your daily activities with more confidence. It helps reduce symptoms such as confusion, uncontrollable jerking movements, loss of awareness, and fear or anxiety.
This medicine is not associated with any physical or psychological dependence (addiction) but it should not be stopped suddenly. It must be taken regularly as prescribed to be effective. Missing doses may trigger a seizure.
In Lennox–Gastaut syndrome
Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a rare but severe form of epilepsy that usually starts in early childhood. Affected children may experience several different types of seizures. Topamac 25mg Tablet helps prevent and control these seizures by decreasing the nerve impulses which cause the seizures.

How to use Topamac Tablet
Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Topamac 25mg Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Kidney

Topamac 25mg Tablet should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Topamac 25mg Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

What if you forget to take Topamac Tablet?
If you miss a dose of Topamac 25mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

The dose and duration of this medicine will depend on your doctor’s advice. Topamac 25mg Tablet does not cure your condition (seizures/migraine) but prevents them from occurring. Serious side effects of Topamac 25mg Tablet are rare. The serious effects of Topamac 25mg Tablet may include glaucoma (difficulty in seeing, eye pain, and blurred vision), kidney stones (sharp pain in your sides or lower back), and metabolic acidosis (tiredness, loss of appetite, irregular and faint heartbeat). Other serious side effects of Topamac 25mg Tablet could be suicidal thoughts and insufficient sweating (some children taking Topamac 25mg Tablet may not sweat enough in hot weather, causing their body temperatures to rise).
Q. I am taking valproic acid for fits. Will Topamac 25mg Tablet interfere with the working of valproic acid? Can this combination be taken?
Topamac 25mg Tablet does not interfere with the working of valproic acid, but it increases the risk of getting excess levels of ammonia in the blood (hyperammonemia). Increased levels of ammonia in the blood can be dangerous and may cause difficulty in thinking, remembering information, or solving problems. It may also decrease your alertness and make you feel very sleepy with low energy. Immediately inform your doctor if you notice these symptoms. It is important to know that, in rare cases, Topamac 25mg Tablet alone can cause hyperammonemia.
Q. Can Topamac 25mg Tablet be used in children?
Yes, Topamac 25mg Tablet is used for seizures in children more than 2 years of age. However, because of the lack of any reports, this medicine is not recommended to be used in children for migraines.
Q. Since I have started using Topamac 25mg Tablet people are saying that I have lost weight. Is it because of Topamac 25mg Tablet or something else for which I should get investigated?
It could be due to Topamac 25mg Tablet because Topamac 25mg Tablet commonly causes weight loss probably due to a decrease in appetite. If you still have any doubts, talk to your doctor who will advise you appropriately.
